Registration!

20 Nov

This will be short and sweet, as it’s late and I still need to brush up on my knowledge of net neutrality. We registered for classes this week, and while one of my classes was full when I got there, I’m still pretty happy with the results:

  • Organization of Information: This is a SLIS required course, and (you guessed it) covers the basics of how information is organized
  • Cataloging and Classification: A librarian classic. This is what SLIS refers to as a “Tier 2” course. As in, we’re not saying you have to take it, but we think you’ll really, really regret it if you don’t. Or something. Either way, it was recommended as a good course for people interested in the digital track (me!) because much of that is based on traditional methods
  • Field Project – Library & Information Literacy: This is what’s known around SLIS as the LILI practicum. I’ll have to get back to you on what LILI stands for (maybe library & information literacy instruction???) but basically, I’ll be working in the academic trenches with instructional librarians to teach/put on workshops for first years on how to use the library’s resources. I’m very excited and TERRIFIED all at once.

I had hoped to take four classes, but the way this semester’s gone and with wedding planning, I decided it would be better to make myself insane next year. When the beau’s tied to me for life (hi honey!). Plus that will give me more chances to get into that database class I missed out on this semester. Fingers crossed!

I’ve been a working librarian for twenty years (gosh, really?) as reference librarian, systems geek and administrator, and the only time I really used any of my cataloging class was while working with our ILS. It was easier to crank out useful reports for people if I could dig into the MARC tags. Thank heavens we have a cataloger on staff!
